CPR Classes can help you to save a life by teaching you your ABC’s! I am sure that you have seen the movies where the hot life guard saves the guy and starts to give him mouth to mouth just to find out that he had been faking. Sadly enough they are not faking all of the time. It is a very frightening thing when someone is drowning and you are their only hope for survival. It is not as scary if you know adult CPR however. When you know how to do CPR you immediately improve their chances of making it. If you allow them to just lay there and wait you may find that it is too late.Let’s now go on to look at the ABC’s of how to save someone’s life by using this technique.
A is for airway. Before you do anything make sure that you check the person to see if they are breathing. Make sure that you stop look and listen to make sure that they are not breathing before you start to straighten out their airway and begin the breathing part of the ABC’s of adult CPR.
B is for breathing. Make sure that the victim’s airway is still in the proper position. Keep their head steadied by putting your hand on their chin. Then you must pinch the person’s nose with your fingers. When you do this it will prevent air from escaping while you are trying to ventilate the person. You will place your mouth over the victim’s mouth and this will create a tight seal. Keep an eye on the person’s chest as you are assisting them in breathing.Do not over inflate the person’s lungs or otherwise you may force air into their stomach. If you do this it may make them vomit. You should be giving the person two full breaths. Allow the lungs to relax in between the breaths and listen as the air comes out and the lungs go down.
C is for circulation. You can check to see if the person’s heart is still beating by placing two fingertips on his carotid artery. You can find this artery in the depression between the neck muscles and windpipe. If there is no pulse when you check the victim you have to perform chest compressions.
