Can Anger Mean I Have Depression?

Anger is an emotion we all suffer from on occasion. Unfortunately, it may not be because we’re having temper fits like any spoiled child. There is often more to it than that. However, to know which is which, you may need to look at other aspects of the problem.

Lost Battle: Have you ever been filled with righteous anger? You or someone else has been wronged and it is time to go on a crusade to get justice may be just the scenario. What happens if your attempt to find this justice fails? One sure thing that will happen is depression, and if the wrong was serious, it could lead to a severe, chronic case.

Masking: People suffering from this disorder are often reluctant to admit they have a problem. Part of it is that society still looks down on the problem, even though studies show that it is not the fault of the patient. Instead, they hide their feelings behind anger.

There’s a good reason for that, actually. Depressed people want to withdraw from the world. They want everyone to go away and leave them alone. Getting mad on a regular basis is something that will drive even family members away. Unfortunately, that’s not going to help the situation any.

Pain: In this instance, I’m thinking of physical pain rather than emotional. Serious and/or chronic pain can cause both depression and anger. This is even more true if there is little that can be done to alleviate it. Over time, the feelings shift. Depression stays, getting mad easily fades into the background.

What symptoms should you look for to show whether or not this issue is not those of a spoiled two year old?

There are a few, and some are fairly easy to see.

  • Avoiding favorite pastimes is a good clue. Someone who enjoys writing may give it up. Musicians may put down their instruments and the marathon runner may stop training.

  • Lack of concentration is a bit harder to detect, but necessary to notice. In fact, it could lead to serious consequences if it isn’t resolved.

  • Suicidal thoughts are easily most serious indicator that there is a deeper problem. If you or someone you know seems to dwell on these thoughts, consider it an emergency. These thoughts may result in an attempt if not dealt with immediately.

There are things that can be done to deal with these problems. It doesn’t mean you are weak. In fact, admitting you have the problem is a sign of strength and intelligence. If you suspect you have this problem, make an appointment with your doctor today.
